Stump Grinding

Stump grinding is just one of many services that Metro Detroit Tree Service offers. It is not included in the price for tree removal, but it is a very affordable add-on option. Some home owners or business-owners opt to do it themselves, but take it from us, it's a difficult job and is best handled by professionals with professional equipment. Particularly with very large trees or those with deep spreading roots, it's really not the kind of work that the average person with typical equipment can handle. We'd be happy to take care of it for you, and at a price that our customers always smile at.

If you're the do-it-yourself type and you're considering renting your own gas-powered stump grinder to take care of the job yourself, note that our prices for the removal of one or two stumps will often be less than the cost to rent a stump grinder for the day. You can always call us for an estimate and find out for sure. You'll also need a vehicle with a trailer hitch to tow the machine, and that can be another expense if you don't already have one. Also note that using a stump grinder is a very dangerous operation unless you have the proper training, so if you do go that route, you'll definitely want to make sure that your dealer gives you the full amount of training before you try to operate it! We strongly suggest that you hire us for these types of jobs, as you'll be safe and sound indoors while we take all the mess and hassle out of the operation.

The process that we use to remove and grind your tree stumps is this. First we go in by hand, with a shovel, to remove any rocks that are loose or embedded around the stump. These rocks pose a hazard, and can also damage our cutting wheel if they aren't removed. We then take a chain saw and trim the stump as close to the ground as possible. This is one of the extra steps that we take to make the job even quicker and more efficient. It's not absolutely necessary, but is a mark of professionalism as far as we are concerned.

Next, we raise the grinder wheel a few inches above the stump using the hydraulic lever. We swing the wheel in a side-to-side motion to efficiently clear out the wood. Every four inches or so, we raise the wheel, move in closer, and go at it once again. We continue that process until we have ground through the entire stump. Then we rake up all the wood chips and either haul them away or leave them for you if you have specified that you'd like to use them for mulch or landscaping materials. Finally, we tamp down and rake the soil, and if necessary, spread a layer of grass seed which we then rake into the soil. You'll be responsible for watering the area on a regular basis until your grass has taken root.

As you can see, the process of grinding a stump is not necessary extremely complicated, but it does require expensive and difficult-to-move equipment. We have invested in several different stump grinders so that we've got the right one for every type of situation, and even uniquely small stump grinders that are made to fit through the smallest of backyard gates. When you're ready for us to come and take a look at your stump, or if you would like us to remove the stump after we have removed the entire tree, just give us a call and we can talk about it right now.
